Water is scarce! So here are some water-saving tips that you can do right now. [headline score 75]

While Australia is well and truly the lucky country it is also the driest continent on this planet outside Antarctica. It means that we are constantly at risk of drought and It is usually a case of how severe and how long rather than when.

There is no denying that we have seen some of the harshest conditions in Australia over the last few years with warmer and drier weather. The data below is information from the Bureau of Meteorology and just shows how hot and dry it has been.

The last few years have certainly been tough for a lot of Australians, especially in rural areas. To make it tougher prolonged periods of dry weather brings water restrictions, different restrictions apply for different areas of the state and country. Here is a summary of the local restrictions for Narrabri;

Water Restrictions

Level 1 - Low

For detailed information or the current level of restrictions check with your local council or shire. You can find Narrabri shire water restrictions here.

Water-saving tips that you can do right now that won’t cost a thing;

  1. Take shorter showers. Have a timer in the shower and try to limit it to a maximum of 4-5 minutes. While having a scrub turn the shower off or down!

  2. Catch the shower water with a bucket. You can catch up to 5-10 litres of water in a regular shower. This water can be used to water the garden or lawn.

  3. Reduce water usage in your toilet. Place a brick or object in your cistern which will result in less water per flush.

  4. Half flush for number 1, full flush for number 2!

  5. Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth.

  6. Keep a jug of water in your fridge. Running tap water until its cool is such a waste of water, having cool water on hand will stop this.

  7. Don’t rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Modern dishwashers are more than capable of cleaning the dishes.

  8. No dishwasher? Wash the dishes in a bucket. The left-over water is great for the lawn.

  9. Full load in your washing machine or dishwasher. No one enjoys doing the washing so maximise the loads and you’ll do less!

  10. Find and fix leaking taps. This is a great one for the kids as they love being detectives, ask them to inspect all the taps and report back. A leaking tap can waste up to 10-15 litres per day.

Water-saving tips that might take some time and cost a little;

  1. Harvest the rain. Install a rainwater tank and at a minimum, you will have water to water the garden. More complex systems can be used for toilets and washing machines.

  2. Fix your leaky roof. Contact a local roof restorer and have them inspect and fix your roof. This will allow you to harvest more water into your rainwater tank.

  3. Install a drip irrigation system. This is the most efficient way for you to water your plants.

Saving water is everyone’s responsibility and together we can make a difference.
